About PINCODE System

The Postal Index Number (PIN) or PIN Code is a 6-digit code system used by India Post to simplify mail sorting and delivery across India. It was introduced on 15th August 1972 by Shriram Bhikaji Velankar to streamline deliveries, eliminate confusion from similar place names, and handle diverse languages, identifying zones, sub-zones, sorting districts, and the specific delivery post office.

The first digit of the PIN reflects the Zone. In India there are 9 PIN Zones, out of which first 8 stands for Geographical Location and 9 is especially used for the Army Postal Service.

Why Is PINCODE Important?

Efficient Mail Delivery

The primary role of a PINCODE is to ensure quick and accurate delivery of parcels, letters, and documents by sorting them based on location.

Online Shopping

Every time you order a product online, your PINCODE determines delivery eligibility, shipping charges, and estimated delivery time.

Identity & Address Proof

PINCODEs are used in Aadhaar, PAN cards, voter ID, and other official documents as part of your residential proof.

Location-Based Services

Whether it's food delivery, cab services, mobile recharge, or utility bills—your location is verified using the PINCODE.

Banking & Finance

Banks use PINCODEs to verify address during KYC, assign service branches, and determine loan eligibility based on location.
